Carpal Tunnel


People who suffer with diabetes or hypothyroidism are at higher risk of carpal tunnel  and so following a diet lower in refined carbohydrates is important.


  1. Repetitive activities with the wrist flexed or extended are known to be a major risk factor. If you do a lot of work with your hands make sure that the hand remains in a neutral position with the wrist supported. Splint when necessary. Do not wait for the condition to progress, at first signs take aggressive measures to limit repetitive activities.
  2. Exercise to keep the blood sugar level healthy and the thyroid functioning. Diabetes and hypothyroid are known to increase your risk.
  3. Women, be careful with oral contraceptives as this increases the risk of carpal tunnel.
  4. Try a technique called Hydrotherapy where you place the hands in hot water for 3 minutes and then move them to a bucket of cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times per session and do this twice daily in the morning and evening. This technique is believed to open compressed capillaries that feed the median nerve.
